Include correspondence, 1820-1866, of the Wise family, chiefly of John Wise, Michael Wise, and Henry Wise, pertaining to family news, legal matters, news of Staunton, Va., plans to move to Ohio, a description of the lighting of Weyer's Cave (1832), selling a slave woman suspected of arson (1835), the trial of a suspected arsonist (1838), and settlement of the estate of John Wise's widow, Catherine Wise (1856). Also include several letters from William Bratton concerning Michael Wise's property in Montgomery County, Ind., and news of family and friends there; and deed, 1834, Montgomery County, Ind. Also include letters, 1862-1864, from John Wise to Mary Wise McClintic concerning camp life, action in Shenandoah Valley (1862), the Seven Days Battle, the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and other unidentified battles, description of a Union camp, Stonewall Jackson, and capture and wounding of various company members; letter, January, 1865, with condolences to the Wise family on John's death; and copy of muster roll, 1 January 1865, of 14th Virginia Cavalry, Company I. Also include deeds, indentures, and articles of agreement, 1743-1854, pertaining to Michael Wise's property in Augusta, Bath, and Highland counties, Va.; slave bills of sale, 1850-1856, of Michael Wise for Augusta and Highland counties, Va.; receipts and taxes, 1851-1886, of Michael Wise and Andrew B. McClintic; and copy of Michael Wise's will, 1877. Also include account book, 1850-1892, of J.W. McClintic; account book, 1859-1877, of Andrew B. McClintic, with freedmen's accounts, chiefly of James Lee, and details of daily plantation operations, weather observations, and sick days taken by hands; and account books, 1860-1903, of R.H. Brown for Monmouth (Cloth) Factory, Rockbridge County, Va.
